Saved From What?Maybe you have heard us Christians talk about being "saved" and you wonder, "Saved from WHAT?" Well, I readily admit that Christians have some terms that almost make it sound like we are speaking a different language--some have called this Christianese! But if you'll give me just a minute, I believe I can help you understand this matter of being "SAVED".
To Make It Simple That is exactly what a Christian means when he or she says, "I am SAVED." Saved from what? Saved from the fall that lies ahead for each of us if we continue in the wrong direction that we are in without Jesus Christ.
Why be saved? Without Jesus, we are on a boat that is heading for a huge fall. That fall is DEATH. The Apostle Paul wrote, “For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23 kjv) And this explains the choice that every man and woman who ever lives has to make. Choose death or life. When we choose life, we are choosing Christ Jesus our Lord and receiving His free gift of eternal life.
Lost But Oblivious Think, again, of yourself on that boat. You are heading south and just enjoying the sound of the water, the breeze and the peace of the smooth journey that you are on. You are about to experience a 200 foot death drop but are totally OBLIVIOUS to that fact. In reality, you are lost and don't even know it. Now, do you think that as I stand on the shore and watch you float toward certain death I should wait for you to ask before I say anything!?!? Certainly NOT. The very fact that you are not aware of your need makes it that much more important for me to get your attention. This may describe you today. Are you aware of your need? Do you know that you are heading toward certain death? Do you have a personal faith and relationship with Jesus Christ? Have you repented of your sin (changed your wrong direction in life) and called on Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?
The Savior Who Saves Jesus can save you because He conquered the "Fall". In our illustration, we are floating on a river toward a huge fall. In real life, that fall is death. And in real life, Jesus conquered DEATH!! You see, all of us have sinned and earned the "wages" for our sin, which is death. But Jesus came and died in our place. He never sinned. He didn't deserve or "earn" death. But as our God and Savior1, He died in our place. He took our penalty upon Himself and offers us eternal life if we will accept what He has done for us and receive Him as our own, personal Savior and Lord.
An Invitation
Will you do that? Will you confess to God in prayer and to others that you believe that Jesus is Lord and is risen from the dead? By doing so, you are demonstrating that Jesus is now your Savior. You are speaking what is already true in your heart. If the spirit of Jesus is in your heart, then you are a Christian!
